If you are a used car dealer in Guyana, Japan is a great source of quality used vehicles at competitive prices.
However, the winning bid is not always the final amount you pay.
Depending on the auction, membership, bidding method, and vehicle, additional fees may apply.
Important: Fees vary by auction and membership plan. Not every fee applies to every vehicle or buyer.
Membership Fee
Japanese auto auctions are generally not open to everyone. Buyers who want to bid directly may need to become approved members.
Possible initial costs include:
- Membership application fee
- Account registration fee
- Administrative fees
These are separate from the vehicle purchase price.
Security Deposit
Some auctions require a security deposit or membership guarantee before you can bid.
The amount and refund conditions depend on the auction system, so check the requirements before joining.
Monthly or Annual Membership Fee
Some auctions charge recurring membership fees.
If you buy many vehicles, this cost can be spread across multiple purchases. For occasional buyers, it can have a bigger impact on the cost of each vehicle.
Additional ID Fee
If multiple employees or locations need access to the auction system, an additional ID monthly fee may apply.
Bidding Fee
Some auctions charge a fee when you place a bid.
In some cases, you may have to pay this fee even if you do not win the vehicle.
For this reason, it is important to bid only on vehicles that meet your requirements.
Real-Time or Live Bidding Fees
Some auction systems charge monthly or usage fees for real-time or live bidding.
These services can be useful for overseas buyers, but they may add to your total cost.
Winning Fee
After successfully purchasing a vehicle, a winning fee may be charged.
It may be:
- A fixed amount
- Based on the winning price
- Based on the vehicle or auction system
So:
Winning bid ≠ Final auction cost
Your cost may be:
Winning bid + applicable winning fees
Pre-Bid Inspection Fee
Because overseas buyers cannot easily inspect vehicles themselves, some choose a pre-bid inspection.
An inspection may check:
Engine • Transmission • Exterior • Interior • Tires • Electrical equipment • Visible mechanical problems
This is usually an optional service, but it can provide valuable information before you bid.
Penalties and Cancellation Fees
Additional charges may apply for:
- Cancelling after winning
- Late payment
- Incorrect bidding
- Breaking auction rules
Never bid unless you are prepared to purchase the vehicle.
Automobile Recycling Fee
The Automobile Recycling Fee is a vehicle-related charge and is different from an auction fee.
The amount depends on the vehicle. For exported vehicles, the recycling deposit may be refundable through the proper procedure, depending on the requirements.
Remaining Automobile Tax
A vehicle may have a remaining portion of automobile tax that appears in the final settlement.
The amount depends on the vehicle and transaction.
Remaining Vehicle Inspection & Compulsory Insurance
A vehicle may still have time remaining on its Japanese vehicle inspection and Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance (CALI).
These amounts may be reflected in the final settlement depending on the transaction.
Consumption Tax
Japanese consumption tax may apply to taxable parts of the transaction.
Whether it is included or added depends on the vehicle and seller’s tax status.
The Winning Bid Is Not the Whole Cost
For example, if you win a vehicle for:
¥1,000,000
Your total auction-related payment could include:
¥1,000,000 — Winning bid
+ Winning fee
+ Bidding fee, if applicable
+ Real-time/live bidding fees, if applicable
+ Recycling fee or other vehicle-related amounts
+ Remaining automobile tax, if applicable
+ Remaining insurance-related amounts, if applicable
+ Applicable consumption tax
The exact costs depend on the auction and vehicle.
So don’t ask only:
“How cheap is this car?”
Ask:
“What will this vehicle actually cost me?”
Knowing the complete cost helps you estimate your profit and choose vehicles that make sense for the Guyanese market.
