Japanese Used Cars Beginners Should Avoid: How to Read an Auction Sheet

Japanese auctions offer many different used vehicles, but a low auction price does not always mean a good deal.

If you are new to Japanese auctions, the auction sheet is one of the most important documents to check before buying.

Here are some things beginners should pay attention to.

1. Be Careful With R and RA Grades

R and RA generally indicate vehicles with repair history, although the exact meaning can vary between auction houses.

A repaired vehicle is not automatically unsafe or unusable. However, beginners may have difficulty judging:

  • What was repaired
  • How serious the original damage was
  • How well it was repaired
  • Whether future problems could occur

Check the repair details carefully before bidding.

2. Check for Rust and Corrosion

Auction sheets may use marks such as:

S = Rust
C = Corrosion

The notation can vary between auction houses.

Serious rust or corrosion can affect body panels, the underbody, suspension areas and other components. A cheap vehicle may become expensive if extensive repairs are needed.

3. Look at W, X and XX Marks

These marks can indicate previous body repairs.

Commonly:

  • W = repair/wave mark
  • X = panel requiring replacement
  • XX = panel that has been replaced

The exact meaning can vary, so check the auction house’s notation.

One mark does not necessarily mean there is a serious problem, but multiple marks across several panels deserve closer attention.

4. Don’t Judge the Car by the Grade Alone

A Grade 4 vehicle can still have scratches, dents, repaired panels or mechanical issues.

Likewise, a Grade 3.5 vehicle is not automatically a bad vehicle.

Check the: Overall grade + interior grade + body diagram + inspector’s comments.

5. Read the Inspector’s Comments

The comments can contain important information about the vehicle.

They may mention:

  • Engine noise
  • Oil leaks
  • Transmission issues
  • Air-conditioning problems
  • Suspension problems
  • Warning lights
  • Unusual sounds
  • Modifications

If the comments are in Japanese, make sure they are properly translated before making a decision.

6. Check the Mileage Information

Pay attention to any symbols or notes showing that the mileage is unclear or cannot be confirmed.

If you are unsure about the mileage, ask for additional information before purchasing.

Clear mileage information is especially important when you later explain the vehicle’s history to a customer.

7. Be Careful With Flood or Fire-Damaged Vehicles

Vehicles with signs of flood, fire or other serious damage require particular attention.

They may have hidden electrical, mechanical or corrosion-related problems that are difficult to identify and repair.

A low auction price can therefore lead to higher costs later.

A Simple Rule for Beginners

Don’t focus only on finding the cheapest car.

Instead, make sure you understand:

What you are buying
↓
The vehicle's condition
↓
The expected costs
↓
The risks

Final Thoughts

An auction sheet can provide useful information, but the overall grade should never be the only thing you check.

A low-priced vehicle may have a reason for its price.

For your first imports, it can be easier to start with vehicles where the condition, auction information and expected costs are clear.

The goal is not simply to find the cheapest vehicle.

The goal is to understand what you are buying.

If you are unsure about an auction sheet, have the information translated and reviewed before placing a bid.
