If you are importing a used car from Japan to Guyana, Pre-Shipment Inspection is an important step before shipping.
Since February 1, 2025, applicable used motor vehicles shipped to Guyana must undergo inspection. The Vehicle Inspection Certificate is required for customs clearance and must be uploaded with the relevant documents through ASYCUDA. Without it, the customs declaration may not be processed or the vehicle released.
What Does the Inspection Check?
The inspection checks the vehicle’s:
- Exterior and interior
- Engine and exhaust
- Brakes, steering and suspension
- Wheels and tires
- Electrical systems and lights
- Mirrors, wipers and glass
- Instruments and accessories
Technical tests may include the speedometer, braking performance, headlights, side slip, exhaust gas and smoke, driving/idling, and radioactive contamination.
When Should It Be Done?
The inspection must be completed in Japan before the vehicle is shipped.
Vehicle sourcing → Auction purchase → Pre-Shipment Inspection → Vehicle Inspection Certificate → Export procedures → Shipping → Customs clearance in Guyana
Who Can Arrange It?
A Japanese exporter can coordinate the inspection and other Japan-side procedures for you, including auction purchase, domestic transportation and export documentation. This is especially convenient for importers purchasing remotely.
Make sure the vehicle information, including the chassis number and specifications, is consistent across the documents and that the Vehicle Inspection Certificate has been issued before shipping.
How Much Does It Cost?
The inspection fee is approximately ¥27,000, separate from the vehicle and shipping costs. The fee may vary slightly each month depending on the number of vehicles being exported, as the amount is reviewed monthly.

Your total import cost may include the:
- vehicle price
- auction fees
- domestic transportation
- inspection
- export documents
- port charges
- ocean freight
- customs duties/taxes
- local clearance and transportation.
For car dealers, calculating the total landed cost is important because a low auction price does not always mean the lowest overall import cost.
